qEEG-guided neurofeedback is a highly personalized approach to brain training that uses brain mapping to inform and guide treatment. A quantitative EEG (qEEG) measures electrical activity across different areas of the brain, identifying unique patterns that may be related to mood regulation, attention, sleep, or stress responses.
Using this individualized information, neurofeedback sessions are designed specifically for your needs. Through the process of operant conditioning, the brain receives real-time feedback—rewarding healthier, more balanced patterns of activity and gradually strengthening them over time.
Neurofeedback is supported by a growing body of scientific research demonstrating its effectiveness in improving brain regulation and overall functioning. Evidence-based applications include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety and mood disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as sleep difficulties and stress-related dysregulation. It has also shown benefit as an adjunctive intervention for traumatic brain injury, migraine, and addiction recovery, and may support individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental or cognitive challenges. By training the brain to achieve more stable and efficient patterns of activity, neurofeedback offers a non-invasive, research-supported pathway to improved emotional regulation, cognitive clarity, and overall resilience.

EMDR is an evidence-based therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process and heal from distressing or traumatic experiences. Through guided bilateral stimulation—such as eye movements, sounds, or gentle taps—EMDR supports the brain’s natural ability to reprocess painful memories and integrate them in a healthier, more adaptive way. This process reduces emotional intensity and physiological reactivity, allowing clients to experience greater calm, clarity, and resilience. EMDR can be effective for post-traumatic stress, anxiety, depression, and other conditions where unresolved experiences continue to impact daily life.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a compassionate and integrative approach to psychotherapy that helps clients understand and heal the different “parts” within themselves—such as those that carry pain, protect from vulnerability, or strive for control. Rooted in the belief that every part has a positive intention, IFS guides clients in developing a curious, nonjudgmental relationship with their inner world. Through this process, individuals learn to access their innate capacity for calm, clarity, and confidence—the qualities of what IFS calls the “Self.” This approach is particularly effective for trauma, anxiety, depression, and relationship challenges, fostering deep self-awareness and emotional balance.
Story Work is a transformative therapeutic approach that invites clients to explore the personal stories that have shaped their identity, relationships, and understanding of self. Rooted in the teachings of the Allender Center in Seattle, this work focuses on engaging past experiences—especially those marked by harm or loss—with curiosity, compassion, and truth. Through guided reflection and narrative exploration, clients learn to recognize patterns, name wounds, and uncover the courage to live more freely and authentically. Story Work helps bridge the gap between the past and present, allowing for deeper healing, integration, and restoration of the heart.

Zyto Scan Technology is a non-invasive bioenergetic assessment tool that provides insight into how the body is functioning and responding to stress. Using galvanic skin response (GSR), the Zyto scan measures subtle changes in electrical conductivity as the body interacts with digital signatures representing various organs, systems, and nutritional or environmental factors. This information helps identify areas of energetic imbalance or stress, guiding a more personalized approach to wellness and self-regulation. While not a diagnostic tool, Zyto technology offers valuable feedback that complements psychotherapy and neurofeedback by supporting the body’s natural capacity for balance and resilience.

At Heal from the Root, I incorporate advanced wellness technologies that support the body’s natural ability to restore balance and promote healing. Molecular hydrogen therapy provides powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits at the cellular level, helping to reduce oxidative stress and enhance energy and recovery. Alpha-Stim cranial electrotherapy uses gentle electrical currents to calm the nervous system and improve symptoms of anxiety, depression, and insomnia by promoting healthy neurochemical balance. Vielight photobiomodulation applies specific wavelengths of light to stimulate cellular repair, improve cognitive performance, and support overall brain health. These tools are used as adjunctive supports to psychotherapy and neurofeedback, enhancing the body’s resilience and optimizing the foundation for emotional and physiological well-being. Maryann offers affordable functional testing through Designs for Health which include a GI panel, metabolic panel, 24 hour hormonal panel, and genetic testing.

FAQs

Therapy has potential emotional risks.  Approaching certain thoughts and feelings may be painful.  Making changes in your beliefs or behaviors can be scary, and sometimes disruptive to your relationships. On the other hand, psychotherapy has also been shown to have many benefits. Therapy often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems, and significant reductions in feelings of distress, but there are no guarantees of what you will experience.

Neurofeedback has been studied and used in treatment for over 40 years; however, some professionals still consider neurofeedback to be new and experimental.  Neurofeedback has not yet become a regulated profession.  This means that no specific licenses, certifications, or permits are required to regulate its use.  Maryann has completed the necessary training and certification to responsibly use this tool.  There are no guarantees that you will receive all the benefits without any side-effects.  Many clinical studies have been published on some of the uses of neurofeedback while other applications have few or no studies published. The degree to which treatment will be successful is not predictable.

The purpose of the QEEG is to provide information about the functioning of the brain and information that may be helpful in treatment planning for both neurofeedback and to make recommendations in general to help support your overall health. It is important to understand that there may be recommendations in your QEEG report based on the findings that suggest that neurofeedback may not be as effective at reducing symptoms until after other recommendations for further medical testing, further psychiatric consultation or interventions are pursued and addressed.

Additional information about neurofeedback is available upon request from Maryann or from the following websites: International Society for Neurofeedback & Research (http://www.isnr.org/), Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (http://www.bcia.org/), or EEG Spectrum International (http://www.eegspectrum.com/).

In our office, we use QEEG technology to understand how the different areas of the brain are functioning and communicating with each other. This allows us to develop a neurofeedback training program that aims to improve brain wave functioning and relieve symptoms.

An EEG machine measures the electrical energy released by nerve cells at work. The numbers of brain cells firing at different speeds produce the brainwave patterns seen on the EEG. The brainwaves have names, but in general, the speedier brainwaves are used for thinking while the slower ones are used for relaxation and to maintain involuntary bodily functions. Neurofeedback allows us to regulate our brainwave patterns.

Neurofeedback encourages specific areas of the brain to speed up or slow down as needed, essentially stabilizing brain activity. Neurofeedback training encourages flexible and adaptive brain wave communication that results in the experience of moving more smoothly from one state of arousal to another. Eventually, no more training is required to maintain improved these benefits.

Maryann is not a preferred provider with any insurance companies.  She does not file insurance paperwork for clients, and she does not accept any insurance that does not permit the client to self-file, or that requires updated reports or filings from Maryann.

Neurofeedback is considered experimental by most insurance companies at this time.  If a client chooses to attempt to self-file with their insurance company for partial or full reimbursement for Maryann’s services, it is completely the responsibility of the client to communicate with their insurance company.  Maryann will provide requested information and statements to assist the client, but is not obligated in any way to participate in insurance claims.

The following are codes that may be appropriate for a client depending on the services they will be receiving: 90901 (any modality of biofeedback) or 90837(can only be used if receiving psychotherapy) or 90876 for a combination of talk therapy and neurofeedback. These codes will be listed on invoices. It is recommended that clients who would like to self-file for insurance reimbursement call their insurance company beforehand and find out if any of the above codes are covered.  It should be noted that most insurance companies DO NOT reimburse for neurofeedback.  If one or more of the CPT codes listed above is acceptable, the insurance company may require that the insured has a specific diagnosis before approval or reimbursement.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) methodology is a form of adaptive information processing which may help the brain unblock mal-adaptive material.  It also appears that EMDR may avoid some of the long and difficult ab-reactive work often involved in the treatment of anxiety, panic attack, post- traumatic stress symptoms (such as intrusive thoughts, nightmares and flashbacks), dissociative disorders, depression, phobias, identity crisis and other traumatic experiences. Distressing, unresolved memories may resurface through the use of the EMDR procedure.

Some clients experience reactions during the treatment sessions that neither they nor the administering clinician may have anticipated, including but not limited to, high level emotional or physical sensations. Subsequent to the treatment session, the processing of incidents and/or material may continue and dreams, memories, flashbacks, feelings. etc., may surface.  Those with limiting or special medical conditions (pregnancy, heart condition, ocular difficulties, etc.) should consult their medical professionals before participating in this therapeutic method. For some people, this method may result in sharper memory; other people may experience fuzzier memory following the treatment. If you are involved in a legal case and need to testify, please discuss this with your therapist.
